China Integrates AI into Education to Foster Digital Job Market

China's education system is undergoing a significant transformation characterized by the incorporation of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. A recently issued guideline, endorsed by the Ministry of Education and several other departments, aims to create an AI-driven educational framework that seamlessly integrates smart technologies into all aspects of teaching, learning, assessments, and academic research.

Zhou Dawang, a leading figure at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the need for a comprehensive reformation of academic disciplines and curricular offerings to align them with the requirements of the digital economy and future industrial landscapes. The guidelines propose the swift development of large-scale AI models, ensuring their effective inclusion in educational practices while also calling for adjustments to higher education and vocational training programs.

Yang Zongkai, who oversees the ministry's national expert committee, emphasized the transformative impact of AI on job markets and educational methodologies. He urged a reassessment of the approach to talent development, noting that the integration of AI not only modifies teaching and learning processes but also fosters innovation in education. The principles set out in the guideline focus on enhancing critical reasoning, decision-making, and practical skills among students through intelligent educational reform.

To support this vision, China is investing in the creation of education-focused AI models and experimenting with AI applications in classrooms. Educators are being trained to leverage AI for designing innovative and engaging learning experiences. The ministry has developed nationwide AI learning platforms applicable to all educational stages and has introduced AI models in various fields, including computer science and chemistry.

At Wuhan University of Technology, AI technologies such as AI Assistant 2.0 are being implemented to enhance smart campus initiatives. Similarly, Shenzhen Mingde Experimental School is actively incorporating AI into various aspects of its operations, from lesson planning to assessments. The school is working on refining AI-related curricula across different grades and promoting interdisciplinary innovation among high school students.

The curriculum at the school emphasizes key areas like computing, design thinking, ethical practice, and hands-on skills. Plans are in place for deeper collaborations with institutions like The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and prominent tech companies to establish advanced AI laboratories and develop leading educational resources. Zhou indicated that two guidelines have been formulated specifically for implementing AI in primary and secondary education, ensuring a human-centric and ethically sound approach to its adoption.

Using AI models instead of traditional teaching methods might lead to a lack of depth in students’ understanding.
