Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen announced his departure from politics on Friday, marking him as the first minister confirmed to not be participating in the upcoming General Election. The People’s Action Party (PAP) revealed that Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat will lead the PAP Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC slate, which will include two new political figures.
Dr. Ng, aged 66, emphasized the importance of leadership succession within the PAP, citing it as a key strength. He explained his decision to step aside to make way for new leadership, following the example of his predecessors. He highlighted Minister Chee Hong Tat's capabilities and proven track record in improving the lives of residents over the past decade. Former MP Chong Kee Hiong will also not be running in the upcoming election.
Dr. Ng noted the ongoing balance between experience and renewal in government, emphasizing the PAP's commitment to renewal. He stated that senior politicians, like himself, should follow the examples set by those who came before them. He believes that without making way for new leaders, the future cannot be prepared. Dr. Ng, who previously worked as an oncologist, entered politics in 2001 and has represented Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC since then. He has served as Minister for Defence since 2011, and previously held the portfolios of Education and Manpower. He was also the Leader of the House between 2011 and 2015.
Mr. Chee confirmed that the internal boundaries of the GRC will remain unchanged. If elected, Mr. Saktiandi will continue to oversee Toa Payoh East, and Mr. Chee will oversee Toa Payoh West. Ms. Chen will take over Bishan East-Sin Ming, while Mr. Cai will represent Toa Payoh Central, formerly Dr. Ng's ward.
Ms. Chen, the executive director of youth social service agency CampusImpact, previously worked as a teacher and a journalist. She explained that she transitioned from journalism to teaching because she felt she often arrived too late to help those in need. She then began volunteering at CampusImpact, which she now leads. She has also served as a district councillor with the North West Community Development Council for the past five years.
Mr. Cai, the executive director of the Chinatown Heritage Centre, is a long-time Geylang resident and the founder of Geylang Adventures. He has been volunteering with the PAP since 2018. He has also worked in a nursing home during the COVID-19 pandemic. He aims to advocate for the support of caregivers and hopes to earn the trust of residents over time, similar to Dr. Ng's long-standing relationship with the community.

The PAP's dominance is a double-edged sword. Does it encourage complacency?

The focus on caregivers is important, and hopefully, Mr. Cai advocates for the rights of the elderly.
