Trump Reshapes National Security Council Amid Staffing Changes

The Trump administration is in the process of reorganizing the National Security Council (NSC) by bringing in personnel believed to be closely aligned with President Trump's policies, following the recent dismissal of six staff members. According to multiple sources, Derek Harvey, a retired U.S. Army colonel with a background in military intelligence, is anticipated to be appointed as the senior director for intelligence, replacing Brian Walsh, who was let go along with three other senior directors earlier this month.

President Trump addressed the firings, indicating that personnel changes are a routine part of his administration, usually involving individuals viewed as either not fitting the agenda or having divided loyalties. Additionally, retired Lt. Col. Michael Jensen, who has experience with the Pentagon, is being considered for a position that oversees affairs related to the Western Hemisphere, which has remained vacant.

Harvey, who previously worked on the NSC during Trump's first term, was ousted in a previous reshuffle due to differing views with the then-National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster. He has a history of serving in significant roles, including advising prominent military leaders and working with congressional figures. Notably, during Trump's first impeachment trial, Harvey was publicly supportive of the president, which included his involvement in controversial phone communications related to foreign investigations into political rivals.
