On March 6, 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping, also holding the positions of general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, met with national political advisors in Beijing. These advisors represented the China Democratic League, the China Association for Promoting Democracy, and the education sector, all participating in the third session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). During a joint group meeting, Xi listened to their comments and suggestions.
During the meeting, President Xi emphasized the crucial role of education in supporting scientific and technological progress and the development of talent. He highlighted the importance of understanding the needs of Chinese modernization in relation to education, science, technology, and talent development. The aim is to cultivate a continuous supply of talented individuals, fully realize their potential, and ensure their abilities are effectively utilized.
Xi stressed the need to maintain a correct direction in the operation of schools as China strives to become a leading nation in education, science, technology, and talent. He called for the nurturing of a new generation of young people equipped with the necessary moral values, intellectual capabilities, physical health, aesthetic appreciation, and practical skills to contribute to the socialist cause. He also emphasized the importance of educating students with the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.
To develop a high-quality educational system that meets the people's expectations, Xi stated that comprehensive educational reform is key. This includes refining the school management system, granting schools greater autonomy in decision-making, and continuously improving law-based school administration. Education must play a fundamental and leading role in supporting independent scientific and technological innovation and self-reliant talent training. He also stressed the need to refine the mechanism for aligning talent cultivation with the needs of economic and social development.
Xi noted that the development of education, science, technology, and talent is a shared responsibility of the entire Party and society. He urged the CPPCC to fully utilize its role as a specialized consultative body. Wang Huning, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, and Cai Qi, director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, also participated in the discussion with the political advisors.
