China Defends Punishing "Taiwan Independence" Separatists, Citing Sovereignty and Reunification

Regarding a proposal from an NPC deputy concerning measures to address "Taiwan independence" separatists, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, offered a response. The deputy had suggested further detailing and implementing these measures through legislative work at the NPC Standing Committee or through regulatory rules at the State Council.

Chen stated that the lawful punishment of those deemed "die-hard 'Taiwan independence'" separatists for actions that split the country and incite division is a justified measure. This action is intended to protect national sovereignty, the reunification of the mainland with Taiwan, and territorial integrity.

Chen further emphasized that this is a just action designed to protect the shared interests of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, as well as the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation. He indicated that the NPC deputy's suggestions reflect the desires of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. These individuals hope to see legal consequences for those who undermine cross-Straits relations, and they desire peace, stability, and prosperous lives.
