On Tuesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron met in Berlin to solidify their commitment to involving the Ukrainian government in any discussions regarding peace in Ukraine. They stressed that any decisions affecting Ukraine's future should not occur without the direct involvement of its people, reiterating their unwavering support for Kyiv and the pursuit of a "just and lasting peace."
Their meeting took place just before a significant European Council summit set for later this week, which is expected to focus on Ukraine along with topics such as European defense and economic competitiveness. Scholz mentioned during a joint press conference that both leaders are in full agreement on the necessity for Ukraine to depend on their support.
In the context of recent dialogue between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning a ceasefire affecting energy and infrastructure, Scholz characterized it as an important initial move but noted that a comprehensive ceasefire is essential in the near term. Macron shared this perspective, emphasizing Europe’s ongoing backing of Ukraine to facilitate a stable and sustainable resolution. He regarded the Trump-Putin discussions as progress.
Macron also highlighted the collaborative efforts of France, Britain, and Germany in persuading Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider a proposed 30-day ceasefire. He stated that while initial steps have been made, the ultimate aim is to achieve a fully respected and verifiable ceasefire that would initiate peace talks capable of producing solid and lasting guarantees for Ukraine, with the full participation of its leadership in the negotiations.

Good to see Scholz and Macron standing united and involving Ukraine in any peace negotiations. That's crucial.

A 30-day ceasefire could de-escalate tensions and open the door for longer-term peace talks. That's a good start.

Sounds like a backroom power play. Ukraine's leadership needs to be at the table, but are they being railroaded?

They're talking about 'guarantees,' but what guarantees are actually worth anything in this situation?

It's smart for them to acknowledge the need for discussions. Peace requires dialogue, even with potential adversaries.
