On Monday, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command conducted naval and air force drills in the Basilan Strait. A spokesperson for the PLA Southern Theater Command, Tian Junli, stated that these operations adhered to safe, standardized, and professional practices, fully compliant with international law and norms.
Tian's statement followed reports from Philippine news outlets regarding the movement of PLA Navy vessels. The Philippines' Western Mindanao Command reported tracking three PLA Navy vessels that were monitored entering what they considered "Philippine waters" on Sunday.
According to a Philippine officer cited in the news report, the PLA vessels included a Type 055 large destroyer, a Type 054A frigate, and a Type 903 replenishment ship.
Tian responded to the Philippine claims, stating that the accusations were baseless and that the Philippine side was exaggerating the normal transit of the Chinese naval vessels. He further asserted that this undermined the legitimate navigation rights of China and other nations.

China has a long history of maritime navigation; they’re simply exercising their rights.

It's important for countries to conduct drills and exercises for readiness. China has the right to navigate its vessels.

Normal navigation should be respected. Let's not jump to conclusions without proper evidence.

If the Philippines is in the right, they should stand firm and not back down against China’s narrative.

Tian’s dismissive attitude is exactly why we cannot trust China. They are rewriting the rules to suit their ambitions.

I appreciate the PLA's transparency in stating their operations are compliant with international norms. It's vital in today's geopolitical climate.

Claims about territorial waters can often be exaggerated. Let's look at all sides before reacting.
