China Launches Pilot High-Speed Railway Pet Consignment Service

Travelers looking to utilize the service can book transportation for one domesticated cat or dog under certain constraints, such as a weight limit of 15 kilograms and a shoulder height restriction of 40 centimeters. The transport system will keep pets separate from passengers, employing a management model that includes dedicated caretakers and specially designed containers that ensure proper air circulation, moisture control, and sound dampening. Throughout the journey, pets will remain secured in these containers housed in specific railway cabinets, with routine inspections to guarantee their well-being.

As part of the pilot program, owners and pets will depart and arrive together, with passengers required to complete bookings at least two days in advance. To use the service, they must also present a valid animal quarantine certificate during check-in. Fares for the pet transport will vary by distance, with an introductory discount and insurance provisions currently available. Early responses from travelers suggest a significant interest in the service, with some anticipating its rollout to more cities depending on initial results. While many pet owners express excitement about the convenience and affordability compared to air travel, others remain cautious, preferring to observe the service's performance before making any commitments.
