The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded to recent comments made by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Ishiba had stated that a strong NATO benefits Japan and that Japan would continue to deepen cooperation between NATO and its Indo-Pacific partners. The joint statement also included negative comments regarding China's actions in the East China Sea, the South China Sea, and the Taiwan question.
In response, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to Japan's collaboration with NATO. China views this as an unwarranted interference in its internal affairs, an exacerbation of regional tensions, and an attempt to promote confrontation and division.
Lin emphasized that the Asia-Pacific region is a space for cooperation and development, not for military blocs or a new Cold War. He reiterated that NATO is a regional and defensive organization and should not exceed its geographical boundaries or mandate.
Furthermore, Lin highlighted the historical context of Japan's military and security developments, which have long been closely watched by its Asian neighbors and the international community. He noted the upcoming 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Lin urged Japan to learn from history, pursue cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, and contribute to peace, stability, and development in the region and globally. He warned that acting as a proponent for NATO's expansion into the Asia-Pacific would have negative consequences for Japan.

Military alliances lead to nothing good. History proves it.

NATO should respect the boundaries of its mandate. The Asia-Pacific does not need military blocs to ensure peace.

The Asia-Pacific needs to be a cooperative space. It's too important for countries to divide themselves into military alliances.

China is only trying to protect itself from outside interference. Japan and NATO should focus on cooperation instead of confrontation.

Japan's collaboration with NATO is indeed stirring tensions. China has every right to voice its opposition to such actions.

China needs to stop blaming others for their own aggressive policies. Cooperation against tyranny is vital.

I support Lin Jian's call for cooperation over confrontation. NATO's expansion in the region is really concerning.

Absolutely! Instead of building military blocs, there should be a focus on dialogue to resolve issues peacefully.

I appreciate China’s perspective on this issue. Let’s focus on dialogue and cooperation instead of escalating tensions.
