South African authorities have successfully rescued an American pastor who was abducted last week. The rescue occurred during a confrontation with the kidnappers, resulting in the death of three suspects. The pastor, Joshua Sullivan, is a missionary from Tennessee.
The incident took place on Tuesday after a "high-intensity shootout". Sullivan was seized while conducting a sermon at the Fellowship Baptist church in Motherwell, a township near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape province. He had been serving as a missionary there since 2018.
The abduction occurred when four armed individuals entered the church, stealing phones from congregants before taking Sullivan. His vehicle was later discovered abandoned. Police tracked the kidnappers to a residence in KwaMagxaki, where a shootout ensued as the suspects attempted to escape.
According to a statement from the Hawks, the police unit handling the case, Sullivan was found unharmed inside the vehicle used by the suspects. He received immediate medical attention and is reported to be in good condition.
Sullivan's mother, Tonya Morton Rinker, shared the news of his rescue on social media, expressing gratitude for the support and prayers received. She described her son as a "big-hearted gentle giant" who first visited South Africa with his wife in 2015 before returning to establish a church. The couple, fluent in Xhosa, have four children and have also taken in two Xhosa children.
The rise in kidnappings in South Africa is a significant concern. Police statistics indicate that kidnappings have more than tripled in the past decade, with over 17,000 recorded in the year ending March 2024. The country also faces a high murder rate. A report by the Institute of Security Studies indicates that many kidnappings are linked to vehicle hijackings or robberies. The motive behind Sullivan's abduction remains unclear.

The authorities are doing a better job as per news. But are we going to have to experience more death until they stop and think?
