A Russian attack on a Ukrainian city resulted in many deaths. Ukraine has unveiled a drone to counter Russian Shahed drones, a weapon frequently used by Moscow. Russia continues drone attacks, causing casualties and damage.
President Zelenskyy revealed the new interceptor drone, with developers claiming it has downed over 20 Shaheds. The Wild Hornets, a Ukrainian non-profit, is developing the STING system, now being supplied to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The interceptors can reach high speeds.
The organization imports components from China, but seeks to replace them with Ukrainian parts. Production of STING is increasing. Following the demonstration, Ukraine and Belgium signed a defense cooperation agreement.
These interceptors offer a cost-effective way to counter Russian drones. Ukraine aims to reduce reliance on Western-supplied systems. A Ukrainian military leader noted decreased U.S. support, highlighting Ukrainian innovation and defense production.
Moscow uses Shahed drones to target infrastructure. Despite a low success rate, their low cost makes them attractive. Russia launched approximately 15,000 Shaheds over seven months, starting in August 2022.
