Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed his government's concerns over a recent report by defense publication Janes, which indicated that Russia has made a formal request to Indonesia to allow its military aircraft to be stationed in Papua. Albanese highlighted the significance of preventing Russian influence in the region and remarked that this issue has become a focal point in Australia's election campaign.
According to Janes, Moscow has sought permission for its aerospace forces to be based in Indonesia's easternmost province, which is located approximately 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) north of Darwin, Australia. The Australian government, in response to the report, is actively seeking additional information from Jakarta, reaffirming its cordial relationship with Indonesia.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles has already communicated with his Indonesian counterpart, who indicated that there would be no Russian air force planes stationed in Indonesia. In support of this, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Roy Soemirat mentioned that they have not received any information regarding the matter. Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov was reported to have met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the crucial role of Indonesia in Australia’s security framework, referencing the defense cooperation agreement that the two countries established last year. Meanwhile, opposition leader Peter Dutton expressed his concern over the report during a campaign event and is seeking further briefings from the Australian government on the subject.

Russia's geopolitical moves should not be underestimated. Albanese is correct to raise the alarm.
