China's Dominance

China's Growing Defense Budget and Stance on National Sovereignty

Wu Qian, the spokesperson for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the People's Armed Police Force, addressed the media during the recent National People's Congress, discussing China's defense budget for 2025, which has been set at 1.78 trillion yuan (approximately $249 billion). This marks a year-on-year increase of 7.2 percent, a growth Wu characterized as both reasonable and steady. He highlighted that the additional funds would primarily aim to enhance new combat capabilities and bolster military systems related to reconnaissance, early warning, and logistical support.

Furthermore, Wu pointed out that this increased expenditure would aid in refining military training amidst combat conditions and support ongoing national defense reforms. Emphasizing a comparative perspective, he noted that despite the rise in spending, China’s defense budget remains relatively low compared to major military powers, particularly when considering metrics such as GDP share and per capita defense expenditure.

Wu also addressed the complexities surrounding China's national sovereignty, asserting that the country faces significant challenges, particularly regarding Taiwan. He condemned the arms purchases planned by Taiwan from the US, arguing that such actions would not sway the inevitable outcome of Taiwan's reunification with China. He underscored that the Taiwan question is strictly an internal matter and reiterated that the PLA is committed to countering any separatist movements while promoting national unity, asserting that the desire for reunification reflects the will of the Chinese people, despite attempts by Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party to garner support for independence.

Increased defense budgets guarantee nothing but more tension in the region. It’s time for diplomacy, not escalation.

With rising global tensions, it's reasonable for China to strengthen its military capabilities and protect its interests.

The focus on reconnaissance shows China is preparing for intelligent defense strategies, not just brute force.

Taiwan’s actions are provocative, and China must be prepared to counter any threats to its sovereignty.

Wu's comments are realistic. Comparing defense budgets is essential for understanding global power dynamics.

It's naive to think that spending more on the military will improve security. We need to focus on cooperation, not confrontation.
