A launching ceremony for the second Hangor-class submarine of the Pakistan Navy was held in Wuhan, China on March 13, 2025. The event was confirmed by the Pakistan Navy.
Vice Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami, a vice chief of the Naval Staff of the Pakistan Navy, spoke at the ceremony. He highlighted the submarine's role in maintaining regional power balance and maritime order. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Chinese side and emphasized the project's contribution to the long-standing friendship between Pakistan and China.
Pakistan is set to acquire eight Hangor-class submarines from China. Four are being built in China, while the other four will be constructed in Karachi, Pakistan, through a technology transfer program. These submarines will feature advanced weapons and sensors. The first submarine of this class was launched in April 2024.
According to a Chinese military affairs expert, the Hangor-class submarines will be a key asset for the Pakistan Navy. They possess strong underwater combat capabilities and are equipped with an air independent propulsion system for enhanced stealth, maneuverability, and endurance. The submarines also boast a range of firepower, including torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and mine-laying capabilities, along with advanced underwater detection systems.
The project is seen as a symbol of the strong military cooperation between China and Pakistan, reinforcing strategic trust and contributing to maritime security and regional stability. The Chief of the Naval Staff of the Pakistan Navy has stated that these submarines will significantly enhance Pakistan's naval capabilities, providing improved stealth, maneuverability, and firepower. The project is on schedule, and the submarines are expected to join the Pakistan Navy fleet soon.

This submarine acquisition only escalates tensions in the region. We need peace, not more weapons.

The focus should be on diplomacy, not military might. This isn't the solution to our problems.

We need transparency in this project. How much are we spending, and where is the money really going?
