Graduate students from China attended the Columbia University Commencement ceremony in New York on May 22, 2019. Recently, the Chinese government issued travel and study abroad alerts due to escalating tensions between the US and China, raising concerns about safety for those planning to visit or study in the US.
The alerts come in response to substantial increases in tariffs, with China imposing additional tariffs on US imports and the US reciprocating with tariff hikes on Chinese exports. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China cautioned travelers to thoroughly evaluate the risks associated with traveling to the US, highlighting the recent decline in China-US economic relations and domestic security issues within the US.
In light of these announcements, many travelers expressed their concerns on social media platforms. For instance, one traveler named Yang from Anhui Province canceled her trip after the alerts heightened her safety worries, while another individual, Li, opted for refundable travel insurance as a precaution. Some travelers already in the US have decided to shorten their visits due to the anxiety related to rising tensions.
Additionally, China’s Ministry of Education released a study abroad alert for 2025, advising students to conduct security assessments when considering studying in particular US states. This warning follows legislative actions in Ohio that have created barriers to educational exchanges with Chinese institutions.
Education consultants reported a noticeable shift among students, with many considering options in the UK and Australia due to uncertainties in US immigration policies. While current students in the US have not reported issues with their status, there is a pervasive sense of unease. Some students expressed a desire for a stable educational environment that enables them to focus on their studies without the fear of political repercussions.
Further complicating matters, recent comments from US political figures alleging espionage by Chinese researchers have prompted responses from the Chinese government urging the US to uphold the rights of Chinese students and avoid discriminatory practices. The ongoing tensions pose significant implications for future educational collaborations and travel opportunities between the two nations.

The comments by US political figures alleging espionage need to be handled sensitively. It must not lead to discrimination.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and welcome in a new country. Hopefully, this gets resolved quickly.

This is a real shame. Education should be a collaborative effort, not one hindered by political tensions.

Some of these concerns are based more on government propaganda than real-world risks.

The US needs to be clear that it welcomes international students and values their contributions, regardless of politics.

This is a consequence of the Chinese government's policies and not directly the US's fault.

Hopefully the alleged espionage will not affect educational exchange as the US values it.
