Palestinian Death Toll Surpasses 50,000 Amid Ongoing Israeli Attacks and Blockade

The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip has taken a devastating toll, with health authorities announcing that the number of Palestinian fatalities has exceeded 50,000. This tragic milestone was reached as hospitals reported 41 new deaths and 61 injuries in the last 24 hours. Since the outbreak of violence in October 2023, more than 113,000 individuals have been injured. Following a recent surge in Israeli airstrikes starting on March 18, the casualty count has risen by at least 673 fatalities and over 1,200 injuries within just a few days.

Displacement has become a grim reality for many Palestinians, particularly in Beit Lahia, where families are seen in makeshift camps surrounded by piles of garbage. Reports by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East highlight the dire situation, noting that the blockade imposed by Israel for three weeks has led to an acute hunger crisis in Gaza. With no access to food, medicine, water, or fuel, the conditions have become worse than at the beginning of the conflict. This blockade, which was initiated on March 2 due to security concerns, has left many children on the brink of starvation and facing health risks.

Amidst these challenges, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas publicly condemned Israel for its actions, which he described as using water access as a means of torture and displacement. In a statement coinciding with World Water Day on March 22, he called on the international community to support the establishment of a Palestinian state, urging for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian aid access to Gaza, along with a withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area.
