China Expresses Strong Opposition to US Sanctions Over Hong Kong Affairs

On Tuesday, Chinese officials articulated their profound disagreement and firm opposition to the US government's imposition of sanctions on six individuals concerning Hong Kong matters. A spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the latest report issued by the US, which they deemed "filled with lies and fallacies," alleging that it constitutes serious interference in both Hong Kong's affairs and China's domestic situations.

The spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, responded to inquiries by condemning the US report for misrepresenting the principle of One Country, Two Systems and for attacking the National Security Law in place for Hong Kong. Guo accused the US of undermining the region's democracy, rule of law, and human rights, claiming that these sanctions amount to unlawful unilateral actions against officials within the central government and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.

Guo stressed that the US's actions represent a blatant violation of international law and conventions, revealing an ulterior motive to destabilize Hong Kong and hinder China's development. He declared that since Hong Kong's return to China, the government has consistently upheld the principles of One Country, Two Systems, ensuring that its residents effectively administer the region with a high level of autonomy.

Furthermore, the spokesperson defended the National Security Law and related ordinances as crucial for enhancing Hong Kong's legal framework to protect national security while safeguarding the legitimate rights of residents. He insisted that law enforcement actions against individuals acting against the Chinese government are within international legal standards, leaving no scope for US interference.

Guo further labeled the US's stance as hypocritical. He noted that while the US continuously manipulates the notion of national security to justify unilateral sanctions, it simultaneously criticizes China's efforts to secure national stability in Hong Kong, thus showcasing its double standards. He reaffirmed that Hong Kong is a part of China, and any interference in its affairs is strictly a domestic concern.
