Two frigates, the Yichang (Hull 564) and the Huludao (Hull 565), affiliated with a training ship detachment of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, recently participated in a combat exercise at an undisclosed maritime location. These vessels are Type 053H3 frigates, which were formerly key warships of the PLA Navy.
The reassignment of these older frigates to training roles highlights the rapid modernization of China's naval fleet. Advanced frigates, such as the Type 054A and the newly commissioned Type 054B, are gradually replacing the older Type 053 series. The Huludao and the Yichang, along with the Zheng He, conducted maritime combat training.
Unlike the Zheng He, which was specifically designed as a training ship, the Huludao and the Yichang were originally combat-focused Type 053H3 frigates. These older vessels once played vital roles in safeguarding China's sovereignty and maritime interests. However, with advancements in military technology, they are nearing the end of their operational lifespan.
The recent exercise assessed the crew's command skills, navigation abilities, and emergency response readiness. Training drills included live-fire shooting, maritime replenishment, damage control support, and ship towing. The Type 053H3 frigates, designed as combat vessels, provide a valuable training platform for naval cadets who will eventually serve on more advanced warships.
The PLA Navy commissioned its first Type 054B frigate, the Luohe, in January. This new generation frigate, with a displacement of about 5,000 tons, incorporates advancements in stealth technology, combat command systems, and firepower integrated control. The Luohe made its training debut in the Yellow Sea shortly after its commissioning.

The PLA should focus on integrating advanced technology, not training on outdated ships.

Basing training on outdated ships isn't an effective strategy in modern warfare.

Are we supposed to be impressed by these old frigates? They lack the necessary features.

Training on older models can give cadets a false sense of security. Used ships have limitations.

Excellent move! Leveraging older technology while transitioning to new ships is wise.
