An impending Arctic cold front is on its way to the UK, expected to cover over 350 miles with snow and ice shortly. For the past couple of weeks, many parts of the country have experienced a prolonged bout of sunny weather from continental influences, but now reality will remind residents that Britain's weather can be harsh. Starting Wednesday, April 16, temperatures could plummet to minus 6C in areas such as Scotland, accompanied by significant snowfall in central and western regions, particularly the Highlands where several centimeters may accumulate every hour.
Additionally, England won't be immune to this cold snap, with areas in Cumbria and the Lake District also facing potential flurries, according to forecasts from WXCharts, which utilize data from Metdesk. The Met Office predicts stormy conditions for certain parts of Scotland, expecting the week to commence with a blend of sunny intervals and heavy showers, including hail and thunder. The Highlands and Eilean Siar are anticipated to face night frosts, while from Tuesday through Thursday, varying sunny spells could accompany scattered showers, with a slight risk of more consistent rain in eastern regions.
The Met Office has described the upcoming week as a "mixed bag" for the entirety of the UK, detailing an anticipated decrease in temperatures and the likelihood of rainfall. As the weather warms shift to cooler and wetter conditions, snowfall may occur atop mountains. This change could bring welcome relief to certain areas suffering from the effects of prolonged dry weather, which has led to large wildfires. Met Office spokesperson Craig Snell indicated that the week ahead will contrast sharply with the consecutive sunny days experienced recently, characterizing it as more variable with both rain and some sunny intervals on the horizon.
