A section of the M6 motorway has been closed due to a significant lorry fire. The incident occurred between junctions 22 (Winwick) and 23 (East Lancs Road). The closure, which began around 2:30 am, initially affected both directions of the motorway. While the southbound carriageway has since reopened, the northbound side remains closed.
Recovery operations are underway following the fire. Surrounding routes are experiencing delays as drivers seek alternative routes to avoid the M6 closure. Traffic monitoring services report delays on the A49 in Newton-le-Willows, with congestion increasing throughout the morning.
Drivers heading north on the M6 are facing heavy traffic. Queues extend back to junction 21A for the M62. Delays are also present on the southbound side as vehicles pass the scene. National Highways has warned that the closure could last for several more hours due to the severity of the fire and the potential need for road repairs.
Motorists traveling from Winwick towards the East Lancs Road via the A579 are also experiencing delays. The diversion traffic is causing congestion in both directions. Drivers on the M62 are also being impacted, with delays near junction 10 (Croft Interchange). Vehicles are currently unable to join the M6 northbound from the M62, leading to further delays.
Traffic is becoming increasingly heavy along the A49 northbound in Newton-le-Willows as drivers seek alternative routes. Congestion is building on the M6 northbound near the closure, with vehicles slowing down as they approach the diversion. National Highways has released images from the scene, showing the fire and the aftermath.
National Highways has confirmed that the M6 northbound will likely remain closed for several hours. The fire has caused significant damage to the road surface, and repair work is expected once the blaze is fully extinguished. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes. The M62 slip roads leading to the M6 northbound are currently closed. Access from both directions at the Croft Interchange (junction 10) is blocked.
Drivers heading north are urged to follow a signed diversion route. They should exit the M6 at junction 22, follow the A572 north, turn left onto the B5207, and then rejoin the M6 via the A580 westbound. Traffic is already heavy in the area.

Anyone know if there are any decent places to pull over and grab some food near the A49? Stuck in a jam!

Understandable that it's closed - damage from a lorry fire must be considerable.

It's annoying, but I'm glad they're taking it seriously. Better safe than sorry!

Just sat here, watching the minutes tick by. The delays are costing me a fortune in missed appointments / work hours / etc.

Fire damage to the road surface can be very bad so better to be closed to make the road safe.

Thankful for the detailed information, and the clearly signed diversion route.

This is ridiculous, diverted onto single lane roads - this is going to take forever.

Seriously considering turning around and going home. This M6 closure is brutal.
