Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, expressed concern following a record-breaking day for illegal migrant crossings of the English Channel in 2025. He shared his views alongside a widely circulated video showing individuals, primarily men, disembarking a UK Border Force vessel. On social media, Mr. Farage criticized the lack of attention given to the arrival of "600 young men," issuing a stark warning that "many of them will do us harm." UK Border Force vessels frequently intercept small boats due to overcrowding and unsafe conditions, with at least ten fatalities recorded this year during the perilous journey.
Echoing the party leader's sentiments, Reform UK MP Lee Anderson shared Mr. Farage's post, labeling the situation an "invasion."
Home Office statistics reveal a new record for migrant arrivals in the UK via the English Channel during the first four months of 2025. Provisional data indicates 8,064 arrivals so far this year, including 656 on Saturday. This surpasses the 7,567 crossings recorded during the same period in 2024, which was previously a record. It also represents an increase compared to the 5,946 arrivals in the first four months of 2023 and the 6,691 in 2022. The 2025 cumulative total is up 46% compared to the same point last year and 65% higher than in 2023.
The 656 individuals who arrived on Saturday, traveling in eleven boats, represent the highest single-day total for the year. However, this figure remains below the highest daily count of 1,305 crossings recorded on September 3, 2022. The French coastguard reported rescuing 50 people from various boats on Saturday. Passengers from one boat were taken to Calais, France, while others were rescued from another boat. Assistance was refused by some individuals on another boat, who continued their journey. The government has pledged to combat people smuggling across the English Channel. A Home Office spokesperson stated the aim to end dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine border security. The government is working to dismantle the business models of people-smuggling gangs and bring them to justice.

Farage’s comments are reminiscent of past xenophobic narratives that have no place in today’s society.

We have to protect our borders. Farage is right to raise alarm about the sheer numbers.

Every migrant has a story. Reducing them to a statistic does a grave disservice.
