On Sunday, the People’s Action Party (PAP) unveiled four new candidates for the upcoming General Election, all of whom are entering the political arena for the first time. This introduction is part of a broader strategy, with about 30 new candidates being fielded, marking the largest influx of fresh faces in recent PAP history.
One of the candidates, Associate Professor Elmie, has been a party activist since 2016 and is an academic specializing in communications and new media at the National University of Singapore. He also holds positions on boards such as the Singapore Sports Council and is an adviser to the Young PAP, the party’s youth wing. Dr. Elmie has highlighted his concern for the area's families, emphasizing the need for a safer digital environment to protect young children from online bullying and seniors from scams. He intends to advocate for stronger government policies in Parliament that support these initiatives.
Another candidate, Ms. Lai, has been active in the PAP since 2009 and previously chaired the PAP Policy Forum. She has extensive experience in the venture capital sector as a co-founder of Moringa Ventures and a principal at Tembusu Partners. Ms. Lai believes her background in managing early-stage companies will be beneficial for residents in Sengkang, as she aims to connect with their needs and reinforce her commitment to serve them.
Mrs. Giam, a newcomer to the political scene, currently works as a director at Creative Eateries and recently became the branch chairperson for PAP’s Sengkang East division. As a mother of two, she relates to the challenges faced by parents in the community and expresses her determination to represent their interests actively. She acknowledges the sacrifices that come with pursuing a political career but is motivated by her desire to make a meaningful difference.
The Sengkang constituency, formed before the 2020 General Election, combines parts of several prior electoral divisions. It has a younger demographic, with over 50% of residents under 40 years old, contrasting with the national trend. Following the 2020 elections, where the Worker’s Party won, the newest plans for the area's development have been revealed, including community enhancements.
While the upcoming election is framed as a challenge, candidates are optimistic about their prospects. Dr. Lam remarks on the importance of selecting the right people, regardless of their political stature, to truly resonate with the community. The team recognizes the difficulties they face in an opposition ward but remains determined to connect with residents and reclaim their support in Sengkang.
