One Woman's Battle with Cancer and the Power of Family

Lee Hwee Ling's wedding day took an unexpected turn when she collapsed mid-speech, surrounded by concerned guests. She had been diagnosed with Stage 4 appendiceal cancer a month earlier, shortly after her 30th birthday. The cancer had spread, and she was undergoing chemotherapy. The fainting spell, her oncologist later explained, was likely due to a combination of dehydration, fatigue, and stress.

Her husband, Bob Yeo, recalls the moment with a mix of shock and admiration. Given the severity of her cancer, remission was a long shot. Lee faced a lifetime of treatment. The diagnosis disrupted her thriving career and her dreams of starting a family. She underwent a major surgery that saved her life but meant she could not have children.

Lee comes from a family with a history of cancer, but the early onset of her illness was still a surprise. She reflects on the increasing cancer risk for young people. Since her diagnosis in 2020, she has undergone numerous chemotherapy sessions and regular scans. Throughout her ordeal, the support of her loved ones has been a constant source of strength.

Her friends asked her and Yeo to be godparents to their son, EJ, allowing them to experience the joys of caring for a child. Lee's large family also provides unwavering support. Her husband and sister attend medical appointments, her mother and sister assist with practical tasks, and another sister helps with medical procedures.

Despite the challenges, Lee sometimes feels overwhelmed by her family's protectiveness. Yeo remembers the emotional toll of the situation, finding solace in his wife's resilience. The couple has never focused on how long Lee has left to live, and they are inspired by her fighting spirit.

The family has grown closer through the experience. They prioritize spending time together and try to live as normally as possible. Lee's mother emphasizes the importance of emotional support. Lee's wishes for the year included no health surprises, a break from chemotherapy, and travel.

Travel offers an escape, but in January, doctors discovered a new cancerous growth. Lee underwent radiotherapy, which meant cancelling a planned trip. Despite the setbacks, she has learned to live in the moment and cherish every moment with her loved ones. She focuses on making the best of each day.
