On Sunday, Karnataka's Chief Whip, Saleem Ahmed, addressed the police firing incident in Hubballi. He stated that the action was taken in self-defense after the accused attempted to assault a female police officer. Ahmed emphasized that the police handled the situation effectively and that there was no failure in maintaining law and order.
The Hubballi Police Commissioner, N Shashikumar, provided details about the case. The body of a young girl, aged four to five, was discovered in an abandoned shed in the Vijayanagara area. The accused, who confessed to the crime, was apprehended. A case of murder and under the POCSO Act was registered based on the parents' complaint.
During the interrogation, the accused, identified as Ritesh Kumar, a 35-year-old native of Patna, Bihar, attempted to assault the police and escape custody. He damaged a police vehicle and threw stones at the officers. A police officer fired warning shots, and then shot the accused, injuring him. Kumar was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Prior to these events, significant protests were held throughout Hubballi by various organizations.
