Sharma's Scorching Century Fuels Hyderabad's Comeback Victory

Abhishek Sharma, the Sunrisers Hyderabad opener, has a morning ritual of writing. On Saturday, he seemed to have scripted his own success story, scoring 141 runs off just 55 balls. This performance ended his team's losing streak in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 2016 champions had a difficult start to the season, finding themselves at the bottom of the 10-team league. They faced the risk of a fifth consecutive defeat when the Punjab Kings set a challenging target of 245-6 on a favorable batting surface in Hyderabad.

Abhishek, along with his Australian opening partner Travis Head, put together a partnership of 171 runs in just 12 overs. This propelled Hyderabad to an eight-wicket victory, successfully chasing down the large target with nine balls remaining.

Abhishek reached his century in 40 balls and then revealed a handwritten note dedicated to Hyderabad fans, which read, "This one is for the Orange Army."

Following the match, Abhishek, who was named player of the match, explained that he wrote the note that morning. He mentioned that he usually writes something every morning and had a feeling that if he performed well that day, it would be for the fans. He added that he felt it was his day.

Indeed, it was. Abhishek's explosive innings included 10 sixes and 14 fours. He was dropped twice during his innings. This helped Hyderabad achieve the second-highest successful chase in IPL history.

His impressive score was not just about hitting the ball hard. Abhishek adjusted his approach, moving across the crease to take advantage of the short boundary on the leg side whenever Punjab bowled with a packed off-side field.

He noted that he typically avoids playing shots behind the wicket. However, he experimented with new shots because Punjab had a well-defined plan to bowl outside off stump. He felt that the pitch conditions, with its even bounce and the boundary size on one side, made it easier to execute these shots.

Hyderabad's victory moved them up in the standings. Their next match is against the struggling Mumbai Indians on Thursday.

It’s easy to write a note when you score runs. What about the games where he didn't perform?

Great innings, but they’ve been terrible all season. This win felt like a fluke.

Why are we praising a player who was dropped twice? Shouldn’t we focus on the fact that he could have easily thrown the game away?

141 runs off 55 balls? Impressive, but it still doesn't change the fact that their team cohesion is poor.
