US Ballerina Ksenia Karelina Released After 12 Years in Russian Prison
Ksenia Karelina, a ballerina who became a U.S. citizen after marrying an American and moving to Los Angeles, has been freed from Russian imprisonment after facing a 12-year sentence. She was arrested last year in Yekaterinburg when she returned to Russia to visit her family, accused of treason for making a $51.80 donation to a charity supporting Ukraine, which the Russian authorities alleged was linked to military aid.
Her release was the result of diplomatic negotiations that led to a prisoner exchange between the U.S. and Russia, confirmed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Vladimir Putin pardoned Karelina, allowing her to be swapped with Arthur Petrov, who was detained for allegedly exporting sensitive technology to a Russian military supplier.
The exchange took place in Abu Dhabi, a location with a history of facilitating prisoner swaps involving both Russia and Ukraine. Karelina's case drew significant attention, with her partner, Chris Van Heerden, actively advocating for her release, alongside other notable figures. Following 15 months in detention, Karelina's return is a cause for celebration for her loved ones as well as an example of the complexities surrounding international relations and humanitarian efforts during times of conflict.
