China's White Paper on U.S. Economic and Trade Relations
A white paper released by China's State Council Information Office addresses the current state of economic and trade relations between China and the United States. The document aims to clarify the facts surrounding these relations and outline China's perspective on the relevant issues.
The white paper highlights the negative impact of rising unilateralism and protectionism in the United States on the normal economic and trade cooperation between the two nations. It points to the imposition of tariffs on over $500 billion worth of Chinese exports since the beginning of trade friction in 2018, along with ongoing policies designed to contain and suppress China. Recent actions include comprehensive additional tariffs on Chinese products, including those justified by the fentanyl issue, "reciprocal tariffs," and a 50% increase on existing tariffs.
These measures are described as reflecting the isolationist and coercive nature of U.S. actions. The white paper argues that these actions contradict the principles of the market economy and multilateralism, and will have significant negative consequences for the economic and trade relationship between China and the U.S.
In response to the U.S. actions, China has taken countermeasures to protect its national interests. Simultaneously, China has remained committed to resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation, engaging in multiple rounds of discussions with the U.S. to stabilize bilateral economic and trade relations.
The white paper emphasizes China's consistent view that the economic and trade relationship between China and the U.S. is inherently mutually beneficial. It acknowledges that, as two major countries with different stages of development and distinct economic systems, differences and friction are natural. The white paper stresses the importance of respecting each other's core interests and major concerns, and finding appropriate solutions through dialogue and consultation.
