Newborn Spotted Seal Makes Debut at Niigata Aquarium

A female spotted seal was born at Marinepia Nihonkai aquarium in Niigata on April 4th. The newborn seal, a female, entered the world measuring 83 centimeters in length and weighing 11 kilograms. She is currently thriving, and her health is being carefully monitored by the aquarium staff. The pup is nursing well from her mother, Kinako, ensuring she receives the necessary nourishment for healthy growth.

The public was given the opportunity to view the adorable pup on April 5th. Visitors were delighted by the young seal's soft, white fur, a characteristic of newborn seals. This initial coat provides insulation and protection during the early stages of life. The aquarium staff is dedicated to providing the best possible environment for the pup's development and well-being.

Within approximately three weeks, a significant change will occur. The seal's fur will undergo a transformation, gradually changing color. Black spots, resembling sesame seeds, will begin to appear on the coat. This distinctive pattern is a hallmark of the spotted seal species and helps with camouflage in their natural habitat.

This seal is a wonderful addition to the aquarium — can’t wait to see her grow!

It's disappointing to see a baby seal on display as a mere attraction.

I’m worried about the impact of captivity on the mental health of these seals.

Can we stop romanticizing aquariums? They’re not the best place for animals to thrive.

Just because the seal is adorable doesn’t mean it's right to keep her in a confined space.

Why not invest in protecting seals in their natural habitat instead?
