Morioka Geisha Supporter's Remarks on Youth Spark Controversy
In Morioka, a controversy has arisen following comments made by Kunihisa Yamura, the head of the local geisha supporters' group. During a press conference focused on recruiting "maiko," or aspiring geisha, Yamura stated that it is "only natural" for men, who typically request geisha performances, to prefer younger women. This remark was made in response to a question concerning the age limit for applicants, which is set between 18 and 24 years old.
Yamura's position as head of the Morioka geigi supporters' association, along with his roles as president of the Morioka Chamber of Commerce and Industry and chairperson of Michinoku Coca-Cola Bottling Co., adds weight to his statements. The press conference aimed to attract young women interested in becoming geisha, who perform traditional dances and songs at events in Morioka.
Iwate Governor Takuya Tasso addressed Yamura's comments during a press conference. While expressing understanding of the age restriction, citing the availability of training programs and the acceptability of targeting young people in business, he also acknowledged Yamura's statement as a potential misstep. The governor noted that Yamura had later recognized the comment as a mistake.
Yamura's specific remarks included the observation that men are generally the ones who invite geisha to perform. He acknowledged the appreciation for veteran geisha but suggested a natural preference for younger performers. He reiterated the sentiment that it is "only natural" for men to prefer younger geisha, while also emphasizing the value of senior performers' artistry.
