Trump Reverses Biden-Era Water Regulations, Citing "Shower Freedom
On Wednesday, former President Trump signed an executive order that reversed a conservation measure implemented during the Biden administration. This measure had placed restrictions on water pressure, which Trump deemed as "excessive regulations." These restrictions were originally put in place by the Obama administration.
Trump had previously attempted to loosen these water-saving measures during his first term, but his efforts were later reversed by President Biden. At the White House signing, Trump expressed his frustration with the regulations, stating his preference for a more powerful shower experience. He described the current situation as requiring him to wait an extended period for the water to become wet, with a slow, dripping flow.
The Obama-Biden administration had previously limited the amount of water discharged from appliances like showerheads, washing machines, and toilets. The White House under Trump characterized these changes as serving a "radical green agenda" that negatively impacted everyday Americans.
The new executive order will redefine the definition of "showerhead" based on a 1992 energy law, which set a standard of 2.5 gallons per minute for showers. The White House stated that the order would free Americans from regulations that had turned a basic household item into a bureaucratic issue. They also added that appliances had functioned well before the implementation of these regulations.
The U.S. Department of Energy had previously stated that conservation standards would significantly reduce energy waste and carbon pollution, while also saving Americans money on energy and water bills. Former U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm had also noted that outdated energy efficiency standards had led to higher utility bills for families.
