New research indicates that patients are experiencing a "postcode lottery" when it comes to GP appointments, with a significant number facing extended waiting times. In some areas, as many as one in ten individuals are waiting over a month to be seen.

The number of month-long waits reached a record high last year, and nearly 95% of areas saw an increase in patients waiting 28 days or more. These figures, compiled by the House of Commons Library, highlight the challenges faced in efforts to reduce waiting times and alleviate pressure on the National Health Service.

The Health Secretary recently announced the recruitment of additional GPs. However, the number of general practitioners per patient has declined substantially over the past decade, placing considerable strain on the healthcare system.

The research revealed that a vast majority of sub-Integrated Care Boards experienced a rise in the number of patients waiting 28 days or longer for GP appointments in 2024 compared to the previous year. The most significant increases were observed in specific areas, with some experiencing jumps in month-long waits.

The area with the highest number of month-long waits was identified, with a substantial increase from the previous year. Another area had the second-highest number of month-long waits, also showing a notable increase. Furthermore, in several areas, over one in ten patients were forced to wait more than a month to see a GP last year.

Regionally, the south west had the highest percentage of patients waiting 28 days or more for an appointment. The north east and Yorkshire followed, with the east of England and the south east also showing significant waiting times.

The Liberal Democrats have expressed concern over the findings, describing a "stark postcode lottery" that is denying people the care they need. They are advocating for patients to have a legal right to see their GP within seven days, or within 24 hours in urgent cases. This could be achieved by recruiting additional GPs.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care responded, stating that the data reflects the time between booking and attending appointments, not the waiting times themselves. They also highlighted actions taken to improve GP services, including the recruitment of additional GPs and investments to make appointments more accessible.
