Zelensky Confirms Ukrainian Troop Operations in Belgorod Amid Ongoing Conflict
President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that Ukrainian forces are operating within the Belgorod region of Russia, a strategic move aimed at safeguarding nearby communities from increasing Russian military activities. He labeled these operations as "absolutely justified," highlighting Ukraine's intention to respond to Russia’s delayed ceasefire discussions and ongoing attempts to expand its territory.
The initiative follows a setback in Ukraine's presence in the Kursk region, where their military efforts had previously resulted in considerable advances but ultimately collapsed, leaving only small pockets of control. Zelensky communicated this during a nightly address, where he referenced a briefing from Ukraine's military leader, Oleksandr Syrskyi, regarding their current positioning on the front lines in both Kursk and Belgorod. He reaffirmed that the primary aim continues to be the protection of Ukrainian territory and its people from Russian occupiers.
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have noted that Ukrainian troops have reached as far as Demidovka, merely two kilometers from the Ukraine border. Reports from Russian military bloggers suggest that Russia has begun reclaiming territory; however, independent verification of these claims remains lacking. In the Kursk region, historically significant for being part of Ukraine's most substantial offensive into Russian territory since World War II, the situation has drastically shifted, with Ukrainian forces losing control of a large area due to severed supply lines.
Although Ukraine still maintains minor footholds in the Kursk region, these territories are significantly fewer than what they controlled previously. This contraction has decreased Ukraine's negotiating power in ceasefire discussions, putting pressure on Zelensky as external parties, particularly from the U.S., advocate for negotiations that may necessitate territorial compromises. As morale dips following the Kursk losses, an intensified effort in Belgorod may serve to uplift Ukrainian spirits, yet failing to secure territory could elevate scrutiny on the Ukrainian leadership.
