Omar Abdullah Criticizes PDP for Alliance with BJP Amid Tensions Over Jammu and Kashmir Policies
On April 9, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, addressed recent criticisms from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) by accusing them of cultivating a relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that has led to detrimental effects on the region. During a press interaction, Abdullah noted the unusual comments made about him during his absence and stated that those who allied with the BJP and misled the youth of Jammu and Kashmir are the ones responsible for the current situation in the territory.
Abdullah recounted a recent encounter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, explaining that he briefly greeted the minister while visiting the Tulip Garden with his father. He expressed that there was no way to refuse Shah's request for a picture, underscoring the ordinary nature of the meeting despite the political tensions.
The conflict was further escalated by remarks from PDP leader Waheed Para, who criticized the National Conference-led government for allegedly facilitating BJP policies in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah responded by emphasizing the necessity for the PDP to reflect on their previous alliance with the BJP and the consequences that alliance has had on the people of Jammu and Kashmir, implying that they must take responsibility for past actions and decisions.
Additionally, Para mentioned that efforts to discuss the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill had been stifled when the Assembly Speaker rejected adjournment motions aimed at addressing the matter. He argued that the current administration is playing a contradictory role by outwardly opposing the BJP while tacitly supporting its policies, which he believes undermines the issues facing the local population, particularly regarding faith and community properties.
