Japan Announces Participation in NATO Command to Bolster Ukraine's Military Capabilities
Japan intends to participate in a NATO command focused on providing military equipment and training to Ukraine. This decision, revealed by Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, represents a further demonstration of Japan's support for Kyiv amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. The announcement was made during a meeting between Nakatani and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Tokyo.
The NATO command, known as the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), operates exclusively within allied territory. According to NATO, this structure ensures that the alliance remains uninvolved in the direct conflict. The command's primary function is to coordinate the delivery, transfer, and maintenance of essential military equipment for Ukraine. It also oversees training programs conducted in NATO member countries, aimed at enhancing Ukraine's military capabilities.
During the meeting, Nakatani emphasized the significance of Japan's involvement, highlighting its potential to gather valuable insights from the situation in Ukraine. Rutte expressed his approval of Japan's offer, and both officials reaffirmed the importance of sustained support for Ukraine. The NSATU, established in July 2024, is based at a U.S. base in Wiesbaden, Germany.
While the specifics of Japan's participation are still under consideration, a Defense Ministry official has clarified that Japan will not engage in any combat-related activities.
