Russia-Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Claims Capture of Two Chinese Nationals Fighting for Russia

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has revealed that Ukrainian military forces have apprehended two Chinese nationals engaged in combat with the Russian military. During a video statement shared via Telegram, Zelenskyy depicted one of the prisoners of war looking visibly distressed. He highlighted that the capture occurred within Ukraine's Donetsk region and shared that the military obtained personal documents and bank cards from the prisoners.

Zelenskyy further noted that intelligence operations are underway to determine the extent of Chinese involvement, mentioning that there might be a larger number of Chinese fighters among the Russian units. To address this situation, he instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to initiate urgent communications with Beijing to gauge China's reaction to the capture of its nationals.

The president criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's persistent involvement in the conflict, suggesting that it indicates a reluctance to pursue peace. He called for a global response from the United States, Europe, and all nations advocating for peace. This announcement follows a similar incident in January, when Ukrainian forces captured two North Korean soldiers who were reported to be fighting alongside Russian troops, underscoring the complex international dynamics at play in the ongoing war.

Such incidents call for global cooperation against Russian aggression. Zelenskyy is leading the charge.

This feels like an attempt to shift blame. Russia's actions are what we should really focus on.

We need to know the extent of foreign fighters in this war. Props to Ukraine for addressing it.

Zelenskyy needs to stop pointing fingers and start thinking about how to actually end this conflict.

Zelenskyy is doing what any leader should do—protecting his country from foreign intervention.

Zelenskyy is just using this situation to rally support while things are going poorly in Ukraine.

Engaging with China over this is a mistake. It's only going to complicate matters.
