New York Republicans Seek Animal Protection Law Following Death of Pet Squirrel P’Nut
The Humane Animal Protection Act." This bill seeks to establish a mandatory 72-hour waiting period before any animal that has been seized can be euthanized by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Additionally, it would offer pet owners an opportunity to contest the state’s decision regarding their animals in a hearing prior to any potential euthanasia.
The plight of P’Nut and another pet squirrel, Fred, drew significant attention last October when state environmental officers removed the animals from Mark and Daniela Longo's farm after an anonymous report. Both squirrels were subsequently euthanized, although tests for rabies returned negative results. P’Nut, who boasted a following of nearly one million on social media, had captivated many with his charming content featuring his family.
Public outcry intensified after the news of P’Nut's death went viral, prompting reactions from notable figures, including Elon Musk and President Trump. Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz, who is spearheading the bill, emphasized the importance of fairness and due process, arguing that animals should only be euthanized if they pose an immediate threat to safety.
The Longo family, who run an animal sanctuary, expressed their frustration over not being informed about the reasons behind the seizure of their pets and expressed hope that the proposed legislation would prevent similar incidents in the future. Mark Longo shared his emotional perspective on the bill, highlighting the significance of safeguarding animal rights. He reflected on P’Nut’s tragic past, explaining how the squirrel was rescued after losing his mother, ultimately becoming a beloved member of their family.
Supporters of the proposed law argue that it represents a necessary step toward safeguarding both animals and their caretakers. However, some critics have highlighted the limitations of the legislation, noting that it comes too late for P’Nut and Fred and may not be sufficient to avert future tragedies. An attorney representing the Longo family was not available for comment regarding this situation.
