China currently deploys 117 obstetric and pediatric doctors as part of its foreign medical aid program. These medical professionals offer consistent medical care to pregnant women and infants in various countries. They also contribute to the training of local medical personnel.
In the previous year, Chinese medical aid teams assisted in the delivery of 63,800 newborns in overseas locations. This data was presented by the National Health Commission during an event in Beijing that focused on maternal and child health.
China has initiated collaborative projects focused on maternal and child health with several countries. These include Sierra Leone, Malawi, Guinea-Bissau, Burundi, The Gambia, and Cambodia. Furthermore, the nation has partnered with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund to conduct training programs. These programs aim to decrease maternal and newborn mortality rates in Africa, with 15 training sessions already completed.
With Chinese support, a reproductive medicine center has been established in Mali. This center facilitated the birth of Mali's first test-tube baby at a public hospital last year. Additionally, China has aided in the construction of a cervical disease screening center in South Sudan, which has provided services to nearly 4,000 local residents. In Sierra Leone, Chinese medical teams have conducted screening programs for human papillomavirus at local medical facilities.

Sounds like good PR. What's the real cost and are there strings attached?

Why only these specific countries? Are there political considerations?

Is this truly altruistic or a way to expand their soft power?
