PLA and Armed Police Lead Rescue and Relief Efforts Following Earthquake in Xizang

A spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, Wu Qian, addressed the ongoing rescue efforts following the earthquake in Xigaze, Xizang. He stated that the military at all levels adhered to the directives of President Xi Jinping and the Central Military Commission (CMC). Their primary focus was on supporting local disaster relief operations to safeguard the lives, property, and social stability of the affected population.

Wu Qian explained that a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri in Xigaze, Xizang on January 7th, resulting in considerable casualties. President Xi Jinping personally oversaw the situation and issued crucial instructions. These directives emphasized the need for comprehensive search and rescue operations, the provision of full medical care to the injured, and the minimization of casualties.

The CMC's joint operations command center promptly initiated the emergency command mechanism. They directed the Western Theater Command and armed police forces to coordinate effective ground and aerial rescue efforts. By Wednesday, a significant number of personnel and resources had been deployed. This included 2,055 officers and soldiers from the PLA and armed police, 869 militia members, 20 aircraft, and 297 vehicles and engineering machinery.

The deployed resources facilitated the rescue of 27 individuals and the relocation of 2,756 residents affected by the disaster. Furthermore, 21 field medical support points were established, providing treatment and medical consultation to 22,359 injured people. The efforts also included the erection of 2,812 tents and prefabricated houses, the provision of over 95,000 hot meals, the transportation of over 4,300 tons of disaster relief materials, and the clearing of over 4,700 cubic meters of debris.

Another example of the military being the face of rescue. Where are the local volunteers and community involvement in this picture?

Wow, almost 5,000 cubic meters of debris cleared, yet any dissent is quickly removed. Seems consistent with the government of China.

Over 2,000 soldiers deployed? That's a lot of resources. Are they being used efficiently, or is this more about showcasing strength?

The government always says they are prioritizing people, when they also want to consolidate power.

All the numbers are impressive, but lets hope there is not any propaganda behind it.

27 rescued? That's a small number compared to the personnel and resources used. What about accountability and learning?

This sounds good on paper, but I want to know if independent observers confirmed these claims.

I hope they’re also addressing the root causes – poor construction, lack of preparedness, things the government tends to overlook.
