Cease-fire Talks and Continued Conflict in Ukraine

Russian forces were photographed firing man-portable air-defence systems in the town of Sudzha, Kursk region, Russia, on March 22, 2025, after its recapture.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with top military commanders in the country's northeast to discuss the frontline situation and the upcoming meetings between Ukrainian officials and US representatives in Saudi Arabia. Discussions are underway regarding a potential limited cease-fire, but implementation faces significant challenges.

US officials, including Andrew Peek of the National Security Council and Michael Anton of the State Department, are leading the US side in the Saudi Arabia meetings. The meetings will involve separate discussions with Ukrainian and Russian officials. The primary focus of the talks between Ukrainian and US representatives will be the technical aspects of a potential limited cease-fire.

The White House aims for a truce agreement by April 20, but acknowledges the timeline may be challenging due to the differing positions of the two sides. Zelensky has agreed to a partial cease-fire on energy targets and will provide a list of facilities that could be included.

Russian and US experts are scheduled to discuss ways to ensure the safety of shipping in the Black Sea as part of the peace settlement talks in Saudi Arabia. Experts suggest Russia may seek a cease-fire monitoring mechanism to prevent Ukraine from using the opportunity to strengthen its military or target Russia's economic interests through compensation talks.

The US is facilitating separate negotiations with Ukraine and Russia, avoiding direct confrontation. The US may leverage its role as an "information gatekeeper" to pursue its own interests during the negotiations. The US is pushing for a peace deal, including a partial cease-fire to halt strikes on energy infrastructure.

A Russian drone attack on Kiev resulted in casualties, including a child, and caused fires. Zelensky also met with military commanders in Kharkiv to discuss the front-line situation. The visit aimed to boost morale and project confidence.

Partial cease-fires on energy targets are a sensible first step. Let's prioritize stopping the violence!

A cease-fire is impossible if Russia continues its military aggression. Zelensky should not get fooled by empty promises.

Zelensky's meeting with military leaders indicates strategic thinking. He is putting Ukraine's security first while engaging in talks.

It’s vital that the US plays a role in these negotiations. Their influence can help achieve a cease-fire.
