The Olympic gold medalist, Zheng, demonstrated strong serving throughout the match. She won 80 percent of her service points and successfully converted two out of three break points. The match concluded in one hour and seventeen minutes.
Townsend faced difficulties in handling the power and precision of Zheng's serve. She managed to win only 11 of 55 points when returning serve.
Zheng's upcoming match will be against American Ashlyn Krueger. Krueger earned her spot in the next round by defeating Canada's 26th seed, Leylah Fernandez, in straight sets.
At 22 years old, Zheng is competing for her sixth career title in this WTA 1000 hardcourt tournament.
