China Warns Philippines Against Returning Typhon System to the US

In a recent statement, Zhang Xiaogang, a representative from China's Ministry of National Defense, expressed strong opposition to the Philippines' intention to return the Typhon missile system to the United States. He argued that such a move would compromise the Philippines' national security by placing its defense capabilities in the hands of another nation, thus risking an arms race and increasing geopolitical tensions in the area. Zhang used a metaphor, likening the situation to "holding a candle to the devil," to emphasize the dangers of aligning too closely with the US.

Responding to the Philippines' claim that the return of the Typhon system hinges on China's cessation of territorial claims and alleged hostile actions against its fishermen and vessels, Zhang reiterated China's longstanding position against the deployment of this mid-range missile system. He characterized the Typhon as a strategic and offensive weapon, suggesting that the Philippines' actions betray its commitments and exacerbate regional instability.

Zhang elaborated on the historical context of the Philippines' territorial boundaries, referencing several international treaties that delineate the nation's borders. He asserted that areas like China's Nansha Qundao and Huangyan Dao fall outside these Philippine territories.
