China Warns Philippines Against Returning Typhon System to the US

In a recent statement, Zhang Xiaogang, a representative from China's Ministry of National Defense, expressed strong opposition to the Philippines' intention to return the Typhon missile system to the United States. He argued that such a move would compromise the Philippines' national security by placing its defense capabilities in the hands of another nation, thus risking an arms race and increasing geopolitical tensions in the area. Zhang used a metaphor, likening the situation to "holding a candle to the devil," to emphasize the dangers of aligning too closely with the US.

Responding to the Philippines' claim that the return of the Typhon system hinges on China's cessation of territorial claims and alleged hostile actions against its fishermen and vessels, Zhang reiterated China's longstanding position against the deployment of this mid-range missile system. He characterized the Typhon as a strategic and offensive weapon, suggesting that the Philippines' actions betray its commitments and exacerbate regional instability.

Zhang elaborated on the historical context of the Philippines' territorial boundaries, referencing several international treaties that delineate the nation's borders. He asserted that areas like China's Nansha Qundao and Huangyan Dao fall outside these Philippine territories. His remarks underscored China's view that its law-enforcement actions in these waters are both legal and justified.

Moreover, he cautioned that by leveraging the Typhon system in negotiations about the South China Sea, the Philippines risks undermining its own security and potentially jeopardizing the welfare of its citizens. Zhang described this approach as not only absurd but perilous, calling on the Philippines to acknowledge the serious implications of its decisions and to withdraw the Typhon missile system promptly. He indicated that China would remain vigilant and defensive, committed to protecting its territorial integrity and maritime rights.

This is just another example of China's aggressive expansionism. They are not interested in peace or stability.

The statement is devoid of any real solutions, only threats and accusations. Pathetic.

They're lecturing us while building artificial islands and militarizing the South China Sea. The arrogance!

So much talk about "territorial integrity" when they are the ones constantly violating the freedom of the seas.

Zhang is right. Giving the US control over the Philippines' defense is a dangerous move.

China's position on territorial claims is legally justified.

The idea that the Typhon system causes an arms race is disingenuous. China's military already dwarfs the region's.

Holding a candle to the devil"? Classic propaganda. China's actions in the South China Sea are the real threat.

China's "law enforcement actions" are often aggressive, violating international law and putting lives at risk.
