Alcohol Ban

Queensland Eyes Extending NT Alcohol Bans Across Border

Queensland's cross-border commissioner wants NT drinking bans to apply in Queensland, including Mount Isa and Camooweal. This could improve health and ease service strain, according to Ian Leavers.

Local leaders worry NT regulations push people across the border, increasing service demands. The commissioner is seeking legal advice and hasn't contacted NT authorities yet.

NT minister Steven Edgington sees opportunities for police cooperation. A joint police facility is also proposed. Queensland is planning meetings with stakeholders.

A Mount Isa outreach worker supports better coordination. While acknowledging border crossings, she notes services also attract people from across north-west Queensland.

A Tennant Creek resident supports reduced alcohol access in Mount Isa. A local politician agrees the proposal should be implemented quickly. Housing shortages are also a priority.

Implementing NT's bans in Queensland seems reckless and could hurt our local economy.

Has anyone asked the residents of Mount Isa how they feel about this? Consultation is key.
