Max Verstappen secured victory at the Japanese Formula 1 Grand Prix, successfully fending off the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who finished second and third respectively. Verstappen began the race from pole position, having set a new course record during qualifying, a performance he described as "insane."
Throughout the race, Piastri and Norris applied pressure on Verstappen. The Red Bull driver maintained his lead from the start, leading a race that saw limited overtaking. Piastri, celebrating his birthday, believed he could have challenged the Red Bull driver, citing McLaren's superior speed. He requested his team to consider allowing him to pursue Verstappen, but McLaren opted to keep Norris in second place.
Piastri expressed his disappointment with the team's decision, stating he felt he had the pace to challenge for the lead if he had been ahead. He also made comments about the team's strategy, particularly regarding pit stops, noting he was the first of the frontrunners to pit. Verstappen's win marked the end of a period where he had only secured two victories in his previous sixteen races.
This victory was Verstappen's fourth consecutive win at the Suzuka circuit. It also disrupted the momentum of the McLarens, who had won the first two races of the season in Melbourne and Shanghai. Despite earlier rain, the track was dry for the race. Norris currently leads the driver's standings after three races, with 62 points, closely followed by Verstappen with 61 points.
