The Independent's new discussion series, "The Conversation," launches with a panel of experts examining the evolving global security landscape. The inaugural episode, titled "Shifting Alliances," features a discussion led by world affairs editor Sam Kiley.
The panel includes former MI6 chief Sir Alex Younger and Dr. Rachel Ellehuus, director-general of The Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) and a former Pentagon official. They analyze the strategic implications of Russia's actions in Ukraine, the future of NATO, and Europe's capacity to address the challenges posed by Russia.
During the discussion, Sir Alex Younger emphasized the need for Britain to strengthen its military capabilities and reserves, potentially through measures like national service, to counter the growing threats from Russia and the destabilizing influence of leaders like Putin and Trump. He and Dr. Ellehuus also discussed how shifts in US strategic priorities have impacted European security, emboldening Russia and increasing unconventional attacks.
Sam Kiley, the chair of the discussion, brings over three decades of experience covering global conflicts and crises. His career includes reporting on numerous conflicts and serving as a senior international correspondent for CNN and foreign affairs editor for Sky News.
Sir Alex Younger's career spanned 30 years in Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, including roles in Europe, the Middle East, and Afghanistan. He served as director of counter-terrorism and later as chief of MI6. Before his intelligence career, he served as an infantry officer in the British Army.
Dr. Rachel Ellehuus currently leads Rusi. Her previous roles include serving as the US Secretary of Defense Representative in Europe and Defence Adviser to the US Mission to Nato. She has also held positions at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the US Department of Defense.
