On Monday, the People's Liberation Army Navy made a significant move by launching its official accounts on social media platforms X and YouTube, which seems to be a strategic effort to appeal to users around the world. In its inaugural post on X, branded as ChinaNavy, the Navy invited users to follow them, expressing its identity as the "Chinese Navy" and portraying a sailor with a rifle alongside another engaging with a pigeon. The brief introduction included messages in both Chinese and English.
This new presence on social media is notable as it is the first instance of a Chinese military branch actively establishing accounts on international platforms, with the previously existing X account belonging only to the PLA News Media Center since 2016. Following their first post, the Navy shared a more detailed message alongside a video in which they highlighted their diverse responsibilities, ranging from escort missions in the Gulf of Aden to humanitarian efforts and rescue operations, positioning themselves as protectors of sovereignty and partners in fostering global maritime cooperation.
In the accompanying two-minute video, a male voice narrated the Chinese Navy's commitment to maritime security, showcasing footage of naval operations, including the assistance given to foreign nationals during evacuations. The video depicted various scenes, including training routines and moments illustrating camaraderie between sailors, marines, and those they help. The narrator emphasized the timely presence of the Chinese Navy, with visuals of grateful foreign individuals expressing their appreciation.
Song Zhongping, a retired PLA officer and military affairs commentator, remarked on the significance of the Navy’s newfound openness, suggesting that showcasing their accomplishments is essential for clarity and countering narratives about potential military threats from China. He advocated for other PLA branches to consider similar outreach on international platforms to further enhance understanding of the Chinese military's peacekeeping intentions and activities worldwide.

Wouldn't it be better if they showcased genuine respect for international maritime laws instead of just their achievements?

This is a blatant attempt to normalize military presence on platforms where they can manipulate narratives.

This is an attempt to distract from China's ongoing military expansion and assertiveness in the region.
