BEIJING -- On Monday, coinciding with the 30th World TB Day, Beijing's health authorities reported significant achievements in their ongoing efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB) within the city. The announcement highlighted the progress made in the past decade, underscoring the effectiveness of implemented strategies.
Over the period spanning 2014 to 2024, the Chinese capital witnessed a substantial decrease in its TB incidence rate. The data revealed a 37.2 percent reduction in the incidence of the disease. This positive trend is further illustrated by an average annual decline of 4.5 percent, demonstrating a consistent and sustained improvement in controlling the spread of TB. A key indicator of successful management, the treatment success rate, has consistently remained above 90 percent, reflecting the efficacy of the city's healthcare interventions. The statistics were provided by the Beijing municipal center for disease control and prevention.
National data also paints a promising picture of China's fight against TB. Since 2012, the country has achieved a notable reduction in both TB incidence and mortality, with figures showing an approximate 30 percent decrease nationwide. This progress is a result of comprehensive national programs and initiatives. During this period, a considerable number of individuals, totaling 7.85 million TB patients, received diagnosis and treatment. The treatment success rates across the country have consistently exceeded 90 percent, mirroring the positive results seen in Beijing. Furthermore, mortality levels associated with TB have remained low, indicating the effectiveness of early detection and treatment protocols.

I'm skeptical. Are the statistics truly accurate, or is there manipulation of data?

We must know who is doing the testing. And is it always done with the most current testing methods and technology?

A 4.5% average annual decline is a clear indication of consistent progress. Proud of the efforts.

What about the long-term impact? Do we know about any relapse rates or resistance issues?
