Zhang Chi, a professor at the People's Liberation Army (PLA) National Defense University, highlighted in an interview that the presence of aircraft carrier groups in the vicinity of Taiwan operates as a strategic measure to deter moves by "Taiwan independence" separatists and their external allies. The remarks followed the announcement from the PLA Eastern Theater Command about recent exercises conducted by the CNS Shandong aircraft carrier group, aimed at honing their sea and land strike capabilities in the airspace and waters to the east of Taiwan.
Zhang pointed out that the PLA's aircraft carriers have increasingly performed drills in the eastern region of Taiwan, which has allowed them to establish a significant tactical presence. According to him, the positioning of these carriers creates a maritime barrier that effectively blocks external interference while also containing pro-independence elements internally. He indicated that the Taiwanese government perceives the eastern side of the island as a strategic zone for military resilience and refuge.
The scholar articulated that this military posture can effectively sever crucial supply lines for both resources and support to the separatist forces, as well as prevent any attempts by these groups to escape or evade sanctions. He asserted that the enduring belief among "Taiwan independence" advocates that the mainland would refrain from military action is misguided. The present military exercises signal a comprehensive closure of escape routes and external assistance channels, indicating a firm stance against any form of independence. Ultimately, Zhang concluded that this scenario is indicative of the inevitable outcome of China’s reunification efforts, projecting a strong message that paths toward independence are futile.

If peace is the goal, why not engage in constructive dialogue instead of using military threats?
