American Academics Fearful of Trump's Crackdown on Research
American academics attending international conferences are increasingly adopting security measures reminiscent of the past, using "burner" phones and minimalist laptops to protect their data and communications. This shift reflects growing concerns about the potential for government surveillance and censorship under the Trump administration.
Several recent incidents have heightened these concerns. A French scientist was denied entry into the US after border patrol agents discovered messages criticizing Trump's science policies. A kidney transplant specialist was deported despite having a valid visa and court order, allegedly due to "sympathetic photos and videos" of Hezbollah figures on her phone. And a Columbia University graduate faces deportation for participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, despite being a legal permanent resident.
These incidents, coupled with the Trump administration's hostility towards universities and its attempts to control research funding, have created a climate of fear and uncertainty among American academics. Many fear that their research, particularly in areas like LGBTQ+ medicine, epidemiology, and climate change, could be targeted by the administration.
In response, some European universities are stepping up to offer safe havens for American researchers. Aix-Marseille University in France is welcoming scientists whose work has become untenable under the Trump administration, while the Free University of Brussels is offering postdoctoral positions and funding to American researchers in socially relevant fields.
While these initiatives offer hope, the question remains whether UK institutions are doing enough to address the challenges faced by American academics. The "special relationship" between the US and UK may be a thing of the past, and British academia needs to recognize the potential threat posed by the Trump administration to academic freedom and research.

This is a dangerous precedent. Scientists and academics should not be afraid to do their work without fear of government reprisal. 🔬

The only way to stop this kind of thing is to build a wall and keep these academics out! We need to protect our borders from foreign influence. 🧱

We need another four years of President Trump to make America great again! He's the only one who can stand up to these liberal academics and keep our country safe.

Why should my tax dollars go to fund research that I don't agree with? If they're so worried about the government, then let them fund their own research!

This is a blatant attack on freedom and knowledge! The Trump administration is trying to control what we think and say. This is a war on truth! ✊
