Death Toll Rises as International Aid Arrives
The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has climbed to 694, with over 1,670 injured. The military government warned that the number of casualties is expected to rise further.
International aid began arriving in the country on Saturday, with rescue teams from China, Russia, and the United States joining local efforts to search for survivors. The United States Geological Survey estimates that the death toll could exceed 10,000 people, with losses potentially exceeding the value of Myanmar's GDP.
Much of the devastation is concentrated in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, which is close to the epicenter of the quake. In the Thai capital Bangkok, a rescue mission is ongoing to find construction workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed 33-story tower. Nine people have been confirmed dead in Bangkok, with 101 still missing.
The earthquake has caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and buildings. The junta leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, has appealed for international assistance and donations. The United States, China, and Russia have all pledged aid, and rescue teams from these countries are already on the ground.
The earthquake struck during lunchtime on Friday, when many people were awake and able to respond. This may have helped to reduce the number of casualties. However, the mix of modern and traditional buildings in Myanmar means that the death toll could still be significant. Traditional buildings are less likely to collapse than concrete structures, but they may still be damaged beyond repair.
The Thai authorities are working to clear the rubble and rescue survivors in Bangkok. The city ground to a halt on Friday, but the situation is gradually improving. Hundreds of people spent the night in city parks, but they are now being evacuated to safer locations.
The earthquake is a major disaster for Myanmar, which is already struggling with political and economic instability. The international community is providing assistance, but the recovery process will be long and challenging.

The junta's appeal for international assistance is a sign of their inability to cope with this crisis.

The mixed construction styles in Myanmar may have saved lives, as traditional buildings fared better than modern structures.
