A Catalyst for Growth and Progress
The Xizang Autonomous Region, once isolated by its mountainous terrain, has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to its modern transportation network. Spanning over 120,000 kilometers of highways, expanding rail lines, and growing air links, this network is driving economic growth, social progress, and deeper integration with the rest of China.
Just 70 years ago, Xizang relied on primitive transportation methods like post roads, cableways, and rafts. This severely hampered development and restricted the movement of people and goods. However, the opening of the Sichuan-Xizang and Qinghai-Xizang highways in 1954 marked a turning point, providing the region with its first highway access.
The arrival of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway in 2006 further revolutionized transportation in Xizang. This was followed by the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway in 2014, upgraded to high-speed service in 2021, and the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway in 2021. Today, major cities in Xizang are connected by a network of railways, with the total railway operation mileage exceeding 1,187 kilometers.
The improved transportation network has had a profound impact on the lives of people in Xizang. Lhatse, a forklift driver at the Lhasa West Freight Station, has witnessed firsthand the benefits of the railway. His income has increased, he can now afford a car, and his family can visit him more easily.
Similarly, Kunga from Changkar village has seen a significant reduction in travel time to Shigatse and Lhasa. This has improved access to medical services and boosted the local economy.
The modern transportation network has also played a crucial role in Xizang's economic growth. The Qinghai-Xizang Railway has transported over 38.75 million passengers and 925.63 million metric tons of goods, while the Lhasa-Shigatse and Lhasa-Nyingchi Railways have facilitated millions of passenger trips and transported millions of metric tons of goods.
This improved connectivity has boosted tourism and logistics industries, attracting investment and promoting high-quality growth in the region.
Xizang is committed to further expanding its transportation network, enhancing logistics efficiency, and reducing costs. This will continue to drive economic growth, social progress, and deeper integration with the rest of China, transforming Xizang into a vibrant and prosperous region.
